Not so jealous anymore

Now I did not initiate this. I did not act out of jealousy or insecurity in any way. Our resident financier (and person in charge of designating who gets the new PCs) was in our workspace yesterday for a friendly chat and remarked on my colleague's new computer. She jokingly asked me if I was jealous and I said no, I was not jealous of her computer but that I the new software she got looked pretty sweet. She asked in her senior administrative kind of way why I didn't have that software if I needed it. I explained that I had a system worked out where I would transfer files from my PC to my Mac and work on them from there. Only sometimes I have to transfer files to another PC to do other things. Then sometimes I have to transfer files from the Mac, to this PC, to the other PC, which becomes a bit of a headache. It wasn't till I explained all this out loud that I realise what a ridiculous and inefficient system it is. I mean it's always annoyed me having to work like that but hearing it out loud... well she said it was ridiculous too and suggested I just fill out a form and request that software. "Why not?" I thought. A couple of hours later the form was faxed off and only a couple of hours after that our IT guy said he could install it whenever. So this morning, I was playing around with some eps & pdf files and about to do my tricky little transfer thing (basically a variation on emailing stuff to myself) and I thought "bugger this" and asked IT guy to install the new software. He said fine. Great. A few minutes later, I hear him say "Houston, we have a problem" and tells me that because I'm on NT, he can't install the software (not because he was unwilling, just one of those brilliant Microsoft issues). He'll have to chat to Marg about it. Meanwhile I'm left juggling files between boxes and operating systems. Five later, Marg tells me that there's a computer that isn't being used that's due for upgrade. They'll replace it with my PC and I'm going to get the new one. So everything's worked out rather well! I'll be backing up stuff most of the afternoon (emailing myself one file at a time).
