Riff raff
According to a poll taken in Europe, the ultimate guitar riff is from Guns n' Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine.
The problem with polls like these, is that they usually reflect the poor taste of the mainstream audience who'll buy anything you advertise on TV (and this one comes from Europe, where they have the Eurovision song contest, so it's not as if we're dealing with a demographic of musical heavyweights here).
Also, the poll was voted by the readers of Total Guitar magazine. It's the kind of publication that has a picture of George Thorogood on every cover and a 'How to Play' CD that goes through guitar riffs note by note with TAB transcriptions in the back section of the mag. These CDs are actually for people who can't play guitar and need to be helped along with little diagrams of where to put your little finger for an Am7, and where diminished chords are never mentioned because they're way too complicated ("Non-root dominant chord with a flatted ninth... What's a ninth??"). I would hazard a guess that 85% of Total Guitar's readers either own, or one day aspire to own, a Marshall stack.
No wonder nothing by Django Reinhardt made it in.
[This should be interesting...] What's your fave guitar riff? Should Hazy Shade of Winter or Day Tripper have made the list? Talk to me.
