Drug of choice

I only read the first par but found this peculiar. It states
The British Medical Association (BMA) has attacked the government's decision to downgrade the legal status of cannabis, saying that regular use of the drug can kill. [emphasis mine]
This is different from alcohol... how? Don't get me wrong. I'm not condoning the regular use of any drug but if that's all the BMA has against cannabis, isn't that a bit light on? Doesn't it fuck you up in all sorts of ways before it kills you? Well, sure. Alcohol and tobacco do that too but... and I guess nothing's really worse than being dead (as far as we know). I don't know, it just seems arse-about. If it's illegal now, and there are legal drugs that can kill, then cannibis should be able to do worse than kill you. Perhaps if the BMA hooked up with one of the popular churches... they could say it kills you and you get sent straight to hell too. Or if they really want to deter people, they could say it sends you straight to church! Ah, there's that cynical ex-mick in me.
